Sequential Pro 3

Following in the footsteps of the legendary Pro-One and Pro-2 synthesizers, Sequential now introduces the Pro 3: a hybrid synthesizer that offers the best of both analog and digital technology. With monophonic and three-note paraphonic voice modes, three oscillators, three selectable filters, extensive modulation facilities, powerful sequencer, digital effects, and more, the Pro 3 promises to be one of Sequential's most remarkable synthesizers to date.

The Pro 3 features three oscillators: two classic VCOs and one wavetable oscillator. The analog oscillators provide triangle, saw, and pulse shapes with waveshaping; the wavetable oscillator offers 32 tables of 16 waves each, complete with wave morphing capability. Additionally, as of firmware 1.1, users may import custom wavetables into the digital oscillator, drastically expanding the sound palette of the Pro 3. These oscillators are then mixed and shaped via the filter section, which provides the choice of several filtering styles.

Filter 1 is a 4-pole resonant lowpass based on the Prophet-6 filter, great for silky smooth sweeps. The second option is a transistor ladder filter with option resonance compensation, keeping the low end full even at higher resonance settings (making for beastly bass tones). The third filter is a 2-pole state-variable design based on the OB-6 filter, with continuously variable selection between lowpass, notch, and highpass operation. The third filter also features an optional bandpass mode, so all basic filter types and more are easily covered. And of course, an analog drive control takes each of these filter types a notch higher into intense, growling territory. This combined with the tuned feedback controls means nearly endless exploration of sonic nuance.

The end of the sonic signal path is a dual digital effect section, capable of producing all manner of time-based effects. Users will find reverbs, phasers, flangers, tempo-syncable delays and more, making for everything from howling timbral alterations to the creation of a rich bed of cascading reverberance.

In addition to these powerful core sonic modules, the Pro 3 features extensive modulation options. The 32-slot modulation matrix provides convenient routing from any modulation source to any of the 171 potential destinations—meaning that nearly endless options for modulation routing are available. The Pro 3 provides three LFOs with controllable slew and phase offset, as well as four loopable ADSR+delay envelopes. Additionally, four CV inputs and four CV outputs can be accessed via the modulation matrix, making it simple to integrate the Pro 3 with a modular synth setup. Combine this with the 16-track, 16-step, 4-phrase sequencer and a world of possibilities emerges.

The Pro 3 additionally provides a three-octave velocity and channel aftertouch-capable keybed with pitch bend, modulation wheel, and assignable position-sensitive modulation touch slider for performance control. These coupled with the multimode arpeggiator make the Pro 3 as much a synthesizer for players as it is for sonic experimenters.

Whether used in monophonic or paraphonic modes, controlled from the internal sequencer or from the keyboard, acting standalone or as the hub for a modular system, the Pro 3 is a powerful musical tool—one well worthy of the legacy of amazing synths that preceded it.

NAMM 2020: Sequential Pro 3 Sounds & Dave Smith Interview
Dave Smith himself gives us an overview of Sequential's newest monosynth, quickly revealing that there is much more to this instrument than first meets the eye.

The Pro 3 is the newest in a long line of amazing monosynths from Sequential, following in the footsteps of the Pro-1 and Pro-2. Like its predecessors, the Pro 3 features a remarkably robust modulation section, enabling the creation of complex tapestries of sound. When combined with the internal effects, 16-track sequencer, arpeggiator, and the option for three-note paraphonic behavior, the Pro 3 can be basically whatever synth you want it to be.

Two VCOs, a wavetable oscillator, three classic filter types, CV/Gate I/O, and a world's worth of modulation make the Pro 3 one of the most exciting announcements at NAMM this year.
Sequential Pro 3 Paraphonic Hybrid Keyboard
With analog and wavetable oscillators, three filters, endlessly intricate multitrack sequencer, Sequential instruments, the Pro 3 challenges the very notion of what a monosynth can be.

The Pro 3 is not beholden to any musical style—capable of everything from smooth leads to complete tracks of jarring, edgy rhythmic sequences, it is every bit monosynth as it is drum machine or destructive sound device. It offers two analog oscillators and one wavetable oscillator, which can each operate with relative independence: the option for three-note paraphony means that polyphonic textures and sequences can easily be coaxed out of this instrument.

The extensive modulation options, though, are what really brings it to life. It offers looping envelopes, LFOs, a 16-track modulation sequencer, a huge modulation matrix, and even assignable CV inputs and outputs. Paired with the velocity and aftertouch-capable keyboard and arpeggiator, this means that the Pro 3 can be played in a huge number of ways. So whether you're used to working with sequencers, modular synths, or keyboards, the Pro 3 can easily find a place in your setup.
Sequential Pro 3 Sequencer & Drone Patch Sounds
In this video, we take a closer look at the Sequential Pro 3's sequencer—a powerful source of melody, rhythm, and sonic animation.

Among all of its other sonic resources, Pro-3 contains a 16-track, 16-step, 4-phrase sequencer. You might wonder—why does a monosynth (or even a three-note paraphonic synth) need a 16-track sequencer? The answer lies in the 171-destination modulation matrix: in addition to producing notes, the sequencer can be used to automate the majority of parameters in the synth.

With both realtime and step input, it becomes easy to create complex, evolving timbres and rhythms based on an intuitive, parameter lock-style sequencing method. By changing the sounds' settings step by step, it becomes possible to turn the Pro 3 into much more than the typical monosynth. Basslines and leads aside, the Pro 3 can also be a generative texture generator, a grinding wavetable-based drum machine, and most anything else you could imagine.
